Dimitris Kekos graduated from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Department of Chemical Engineering in 1978. Between 1978 and 1984 he worked as research and teaching fellow in the Laboratories of Organic Chemical Technology and Biotechnology Laboratory, NTUA. In 1984 he obtained his Ph.D. at NTUA. In 1986 he joined the NTUA as a Lecturer, in 1990 he became Assistant Professor, in 1997 Associate Professor and 2005 Full Professor.

The fields of research expertise of Dr. Kekos are summarized as follows: (a) enzymes for lignocellulose degradation (microbial production and application), (b) bioconversion of lignocellulosic materials to fuel ethanol (simultaneous saccharification and fermentation and direct microbial conversion), (c) enzymes in food industry with emphasis on the application of oxidoreductases for food preservation and production/evaluation of functional food ingredients in improving the nutritional quality of food and human health, (d) environmental biotechnology with emphasis on the design of the appropriate biological processes for the complete removal of xenobiotics and (e) use of appropriate enzymatic systems for the removal of impurities located on the cuticle of cotton fiber.

Dr Dimitris Kekos has long experience (more than 30) in the area of bioconversion of lignocellulosic materials to fuel ethanol, microbial enzyme production, enzyme biocatalysis and process development. Dr. Kekos has been the coordinator in 20 R&D National and European projects, while in 34 was the main researcher. He has authored over 110 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and over 120 participations in international and national conferences. According to Scopus analysis (March 2016), his publications were cited more than 3000 (h-index 29).
